Chapter Nine

An hour after sunset, just as I was tucking into shepherd's pie and peas, there was another Molotov cocktail attack at Bute Court. But this time Fynn and Posh picked up on a suspiciously accelerating bike blasting up, and so we were waiting for them.

Fynn rang me, flushed with success. "We did it and without shooting them! I blocked them by shoving a shopping trolley out in the road, and Posh whacked them with a cricket bat."

"Excellent!"

"Both men were carted off to hospital. They're handcuffed to their beds. Grimstead is at them, demanding to know who paid them."

He'd taken my hint and was sniffing about. He wouldn't get anywhere but it would upset Slick. It was all good.

I was running a bit of bread around the plate, soaking up the juices, when my phone buzzed again. This time they set fire to Trends, a little boutique by Seaview Towers condominium. Our state-of-the-art sprinkler system limited damage. We also got him on our CCTV and tracked him back to the Black Olive.

As the restaurant lay in our territory, there was no need for me to deal with it. Tank went out with Des and within the hour the wannabe arsonist found himself shackled to a hospital bed, being yelled at by Grimstead.

As we had thinned his ranks, Slick was down to using incompetents. From the single man trying it on at Trends, he was also having trouble recruiting volunteers.

His chat was full of it.

They found Stan. He's in ICU.

Bill, Duke, Darren, and who else? That frigging Trigger is a terminator.

My missus is in tears.

I want a piece.

Me too. A .45.

And Terry, nobody is to go anywhere unless there's two of you.

And more coherently from Slick, everyone is to stay home for now. Don't do nuffing.

The muppet. If he'd given that order at the start, I would not have been able to decimate his men. Since the attack on the brewery, we'd put seventeen in hospital.

I put my feet up and spent the evening reviewing the files Fynn and Posh had put together. Alex hadn't been idle either. In between schmoozing with his guests, he'd identified two key employees.

Typically cautious, he'd texted, Slick is a lucky man. Ralph Prior moves a third of his goods and Joe Savory handles his guest relations officers.

Meaning that the first was a dealer and the other a pimp. Thanks to my trojans and Fynn and Posh's hard work, locating them took seconds. The dealer trained at Shotokan, a karate club, every day. The pimp worked at Ringmere Towers, a centrally located hotel with no CCTV that was popular with the afternoon delight crowd.

Slick had given orders but putting these two men out of commission would hit him hard.

I sent a message to Fynn and Posh. Put around a rumour that all the Cullens are under orders to stay home until further notice. Also, that all the senior cousins are to meet at the Majestic tomorrow for an all-day brief. With luck, Prior and Savory would hear, believe it, and go about their business as usual.
